A Message to the Alumni

It is our pleasure to introduce the Alumni Association of the Faculty of Law (AAFL) of the University of Colombo to you, the past graduates of the Faculty, and invite you to join the Association.

The AAFL was established in March 1998, 24 years ago. It is the official body of the alumni of the Faculty of Law and forms the link between its past graduates and the Faculty. TheAAFL was formed in order to materialize a number of objectives: promotion of the fellowship among the alumni of the Faculty of Law (FoL); to promote the welfare of the alumni, staff and students of the Faculty; promotion of matters of interest and research of relevance to students, staff and alumni of the Faculty; promoting the educational, professional and employment interests of the alumni and students of the Faculty; assisting the Faculty in the development of its curricular and teaching methodologies; and to facilitate the contacts between the students and alumni of the Faculty in order to promote counseling, career guidance and other mutually beneficial activities. The Association engages in various activities which are necessary, conductive or incidental to the attainment of these objects of the Association.

Its establishment was a concept of late Justice Mark Fernando, and a number of exemplary members of the Alumni whom we should remind with due respect – Presidents Counsel Mr. RanjithAbeysuriya, Mr. PrasanthaLal de Alwis, Dr.Jayatissa de Costa, Justice K.Chithrasiri, Mr. T. Wijemanna Mr. N. Selvakumaran, Mr. Ravi Jayawardene and Mr. DilithJayaweeraamong others- were involved in founding it. Since then, the Association has had many exemplary alumni as its Office Bearers and Committee Members. Except for a few years of intermittent interruptions, the Association was functioning well in various manners to materialize its objectives, primarily aimed at the betterment of the undergraduates, the Faculty staff and at building the fellowship among its members.

After being dormant for quite some time, the present Executive Committee (ExCo) of the Association was elected at its Annual General Meeting held on 28 April 2021. Since then, in spite of the unfavorable conditions created by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Association was able to conduct a few programmers to assist the undergraduates in their academic and career guidance activities and in providing some financial assistance to most needy students.

Recently, we conducteda successful Webinar Series organized by the Association’s Career Guidance Committee, assisted by the Faculty’s Career Guidance Unit, and more than a two dozen legal luminaries who have excelled in the profession participated and shared their experience with the students, providing them a glimpse of future career prospects.

On a number of occasions in the past, the Alumni Association had conducted career guidance workshops in the Faculty premises, wherein students were exposed to different career opportunities. Consequently, students were even able to join various governmental and non-governmental organizations, companies, institutions and firms, and work, learn and even earn during their annual long vacation periods. This programme has to be continued regularly.

The Association has been very much concerned about helping the neediest students of the Faculty in their educational prospects. In realizing this essential task, this year (18 January 2022) we were able to establish the “AAFL Education Trust”. The objectives of the AAFL Education Trust include advancing the knowledge and education of the less privileged undergraduates of the Faculty, and providing scholarships, equipment, facilities, accommodation and/or general economic support to such students. When the Faculty of Law is celebrating its 75th Anniversary of its establishment this year, history will record the establishment of this Trust as a landmark.

We invited students of the Faculty to participate in a logo-design competition to design a Logo for the Association. Among the received Logo designs, one was selected by the ExCo as the Logo of the Association and offered the best logo designer and other participants with letters of appreciation and a small award.

The Alumni Association’s Website was launched in May 2022, and it will provide you and the undergraduates access to the necessary information as to how they can benefit from what is made available to them by our Association. Its events are also announced in its social media platforms. The Association is closely working with the staff of the Faculty of Law, in its programmes that benefit the students. We encourage the students of the Faculty to be aware of the future programmes of the Alumni Association and use the opportunities made especially available for them to the maximum benefit of their academic excellence and in succeeding in their future career prospects. The Association also welcomes their feedback.

On behalf of the Executive Committee, we cordially invite all past students of the Faculty to obtain life-membership of the Association and then again actively engage in its activities, thereby providing your fullest cooperation and contribution for the betterment of the education of the undergraduates and staff of the Faculty. We all consider this as a noble responsibility and we are all dedicated to its fullest realization.

Sincerely Yours,
