A Message to the
Alumni
It is our pleasure to introduce to you the Alumni Association of the Faculty of Law of the University of Colombo (AAFL) and invite the alumni to join the Association.
AAFL was established in March 1998. It is the official body of the alumni of the Faculty of Law that links the alumni with the Faculty, including its staff and students. AAFL was formed to achieve several objectives and amongst them are the promotion of fellowship among the alumni of the Faculty of Law; the promotion of the welfare of the alumni, staff and students of the Faculty; aiding the Faculty in the development of its curricula and teaching methodologies. We invite you to view the Constitution of AAFL made available to you on this website.
After being dormant for quite some time, AAFL was revived in 2021 with the appointment of Mr. Mohamed Illiyas, President’s Counsel, as its President. Despite the unfavorable conditions created by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Association was able to kick start its activities by conducting a few programmes to assist the undergraduates. AAFL also established its logo and created a social media presence towards speedy and effective dissemination of information.
Some of the activities of AAFL are listed below:
2021/22: Conducting a Webinar Series in collaboration with the Faculty’s Career Guidance Unit. Many alumni who have excelled in their respective professions and careers participated and shared their experience with the students, providing them with a glimpse of future career prospects. This webinar series, hosted on the learning platform of the Faculty of Law is available for the guidance of all students present and future. AAFL Education Trust was established to advance the knowledge and education of the less privileged undergraduates of the Faculty by providing scholarships, equipment, facilities, accommodation and/or general economic support. Further website of AAFL was launched.
Please refer to the Progress Report for 2021/22 hosted on this website for further details.
2022/23: Conducting an immersion programme for the fourth year students in a leading corporate; a webinar with the Sri Lanka Law College Principal and staff for the final year students to understand and appreciate the history of the Sri Lanka Law College, the expectations from its students and how the students can be successful in the Final year examination of the Law College; conducting a soft skills programme; establishing mentoring partnerships for 85 students; participating in the induction for Freshers to introduce them to AAFL and the scholarships that are available to the students. The highlight of this programme was the motivational speaker who addressed the 325 students, which was useful to the students embarking on a new journey away from their homes. The main fund-raising activity for 2022/23 and the membership drive was the “Back to Faculty” held in December 2022 with over 1000 alumni participating in the event.
Please refer to the Progress Report for 2022/23 hosted on this website for further details.
2023/24: Conducting the induction programme for the freshers; embarking on a monthly guest lecture series on subjects offered by the Faculty; assisting the Career Guidance Unit in piloting a mentorship programme with AAFL obtaining commitments from practitioners and corporates for 82 placements; upgrading the AAFL website to be more user friendly; and contributing a further 2,300,0000/= to the Education Trust. The main fund-raising activity and the membership drive was the 75th anniversary celebrations held last year. With the proceeds of this event, which marginally exceeded 2.5Mn, AAFL was able to provide the Trust with funds, in its continuous quest to strengthen its financial position.
2024/25 offers mainly opportunities for the alumni to participate in the activities of AAFL and your active cooperation is solicited.
Further, the Executive Committee cordially invites all past graduates of the Faculty to obtain Life membership of the Association and actively engage in its activities, including raising funds for the Education Trust. We seek your fullest cooperation and contribution for the achievement of the objectives of AAFL, which no doubt would be personally fulfilling to all alumni of the Faculty of Law.
Yours sincerely
Executive Committee of AAFL
